THAT COUNTRY
(Imitation of The Car, by Raymond Carver)
By Amparo Jaramillo-Restrepo

The country I was born in.
The country of my childhood.
The country of my ancestors.
The country door to South America.
The country with coasts to two oceans.
The country crowned by the Andes.
The country kissed by the Amazon.
The country blessed with fertile valleys.
The country crossed by countless rivers.
The country with the richest coffee.
The country with gold and emeralds.
The country with exuberant jungles.
The country with the most beautiful birds.
The country of orchids and butterflies.
The country named after Columbus.
The country Bolívar gave freedom to.
The country Garcia Márquez immortalized.
The country my friends idealize.
The country so many stigmatize.
The country where middle class can't buy now.
The country where poor people can't eat now.
The country where rich people can't sleep now.
The country where poor children can't dream now.
The country where "freedom" is just a word now.
The country ruined by the "free economy."
The country pillaged by corruption.
The country flooded by foreign weapons.
The country destroyed by evil, vicious men.
The country with a blind and deaf upper class.
The country where we lost our paradise.
The country where I lost my few savings.
The country my grandchildren can't visit.
The country where democracy is a mockery.
The country where I fell in love.
The country where my children played and dreamed.
The country where so many keep working hard.
The country of brave men and courageous women.
The country I still love with all my heart.
The country called COLOMBIA.
