POWERLESS

By Amparo Jaramillo-Restrepo

How I'd like to fly away with the eagles

or swim with the dolphins in the golden sea.

Impossible, for my young, dreamy heart

Is trapped inside an old, rusty body.

How I'd like to shelter my loved ones

from all their ghosts and misery.

Impossible, for my loving, generous heart

is trapped inside an old, rusty body.

How I'd like to erase poverty, war and injustice

from the face of this blessed land.

But I feel powerless, for my young heart

is trapped inside an old, rusty body.

So, here I am, all my dreams waisted,

feeling powerless and useless

for my young, generous, loving heart,

is trapped inside an old, rusty body.
