ILL FATE
By Amparo Jaramillo-Restrepo

(To my son Felipe's memory.)

Son, it took only an instant
of terrible ill fate,
a tragic combination
of bad weather
and small mistakes,
an instant when God
was looking the other way,
the pleading sweet voice
of your child asking you
to take him to play
with the falling snow flakes.
It took only an instant
to take you away.
It took only an instant,
a second of ill fate
to rob us of your presence,
to bury your dreams
into the glowing snow flakes,
to make your wife a widow
and orphan your children
while God was looking
the other way.
It took just an instant,
a second of ill fate,
but it'll take a whole life
to accept in my heart that
I won't see you ever again.
