AN IMMIGRANT MOTHER
By Amparo Jaramillo-Restrepo

An immigrant mother
has to be stronger than her peers.
Swallow her tears in silence
so strangers around her
won't ever suspect them.
Try to invent, to recreate
a new nest for her flock
with the shattered pieces
of her own past life.
She has to portray strength,
even when her inner fragile structure
is crumbling and falling inside;
keep traditions and old recipes alive;
make peace amidst anger and turmoil.
And when life for her loved ones
turns harsh and dreams begin to fade,
cover the glass windows with golden stars,
kiss the new earth, and beg God
to turn around their fate.
