CITY OF ANGELS
(During Los Angeles' riots)

By Amparo Jaramillo-Restrepo
Weaver of Hollywood futile illusions
and shattered, twisted dreams
of a million souls on the streets,
where frightened, famished
ghetto children
have nothing to say at school,
but sordid, shocking stories
of their doomed days on the street.
What good is your wonderland
if all your magic tricks
can't change the lives
of ghetto children
who have nothing to say at school?
Wonderland, never land,
City of the beauty and the beast
